Product information:

What is Methylene Chloride?

Methylene Chloride (CH₂Cl₂), also known as Dichloromethane (DCM), is a colorless, transparent liquid with an ether-like odor. It is widely used in various industries due to its low toxicity, non-flammability, and excellent solvent properties.

Key Properties of Methylene Chloride

Methylene Chloride is considered one of the most user-friendly solvents due to its unique characteristics:

  • Fast evaporation rate
  • Low toxicity
  • Slight solubility in water but high solubility in organic solvents
  • Difficult to ignite (autoignition occurs at 556°C)
  • Easily recovered due to its low boiling point and high vapor pressure

Production of Methylene Chloride

Methylene Chloride is produced by reacting Methane (or Methyl Chloride) with Chlorine gas at a temperature of 400 – 500°C.

This reaction results in the formation of multiple chlorinated compounds: Methyl Chloride (CH₃Cl), Methylene Chloride (CH₂Cl₂), Chloroform (CHCl₃), and Carbon Tetrachloride (CCl₄).

Chemical Reactions:

  1. CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl
  2. CH₃Cl + Cl₂ → CH₂Cl₂ + HCl
  3. CH₂Cl₂ + Cl₂ → CHCl₃ + HCl
  4. CHCl₃ + Cl₂ → CCl₄ + HCl

After the reaction, distillation is used to separate the different compounds.

Applications of Methylene Chloride

Methylene Chloride is widely used due to its low toxicity and non-flammability. Some of its key applications include:

Paint Stripping
Adhesives & Sealants Production
Plastic Processing & Mold Cleaning
Metal Cleaning & Degreasing
Solvent for Polycarbonate & Acetate Film Manufacturing
Fiberglass Processing
Surface Cleaning
Spray Paints & PU Foam Blowing Agents
Plastic Welding (e.g., used for sealing electronic measuring device casings)
Textile & Garment Printing Industry
Insecticide Sprays & Leather Industry Cleaning
Foam & Polyurethane Production

Storage & Handling Precautions

Methylene Chloride should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area. After use, the container must be tightly sealed as the solvent evaporates quickly.

Health & Safety Concerns

  • Harmful to the respiratory system, especially with prolonged exposure
  • Irritating to the eyes and skin
  • Inhalation can cause dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or even unconsciousness
  • Classified as a potential carcinogen and may affect fetal development

Safety Measures When Handling Methylene Chloride

  • Wear protective clothing, gloves, and a respirator
  • Work in well-ventilated areas
  • Keep away from sunlight, heat sources, electrical sparks, and metals
  • Store in properly labeled, tightly sealed containers

First Aid Measures for Methylene Chloride Exposure

🚨 If exposed to Methylene Chloride, follow these steps immediately:

🔹 Eye Contact:

  • Flush eyes with clean water or saline solution for at least 30 minutes
  • Seek medical attention immediately
  • Do not apply ointments unless prescribed by a doctor

🔹 Skin Contact:

  • Remove contaminated clothing
  • Wash affected skin with plenty of water
  • Seek medical attention if necessary

🔹 Inhalation:

  • Move the person to fresh air immediately
  • Call for medical help if breathing difficulties persist
